The Value of Leadership and Information Literacy essay
In the contemporary business environment, the effective leadership is closely intertwined with the effective use of new technologies, especially information technologies. Contemporary leaders should promote information literacy and help their subordinates to use new technologies and information to improve their performance. The successful development of leadership raises the problem of the formation of the information-oriented organizational culture.
In actuality, leaders perform functions of not only leaders but also managers. They have to perform multiple functions to enhance the marketing performance of their organizations (Benfari, 1999). At the same time, they should use the full potential of their employees to maximize the effectiveness of the marketing performance. Leaders should develop effective approaches to their leadership style to help their subordinates to improve their performance.
The improvement of employees’ performance raises the problem of the effective strategy to enhance the improvement of employees. In this regard, leaders should help their subordinates to introduce and to use new technologies (Mohrman, 1998). The capability of employees to use information technologies as well as information to improve their performance is crucial in the contemporary workplace environment. Employees can use information to generate new knowledge and to create new products or services.
However, it is the leader, who is responsible for the development of employees’ capability to use information effectively (Hesselbein, Goldsmith, & Beckhard, 1996). The leader should encourage employees to work effectively and to use information to generate new knowledge. The leader should motivate employees to learn new information and to use information to improve their performance. Otherwise, employees will hardly use information effectively.
Thus, the information literacy is one of the major priorities of the contemporary leadership. Leaders should be able to encourage and to develop information literacy in their employees.
