In this paper I would like to speak about my experience as a volunteer at the Hospitality Institute.
The hospitality Institute
I worked as a volunteer at the Hospitality Institute that is a workforce development initiative aimed to help people to get jobs in the hospitality industry. The mission of the Hospitality Institute is to provide city residents with a bridge to job opportunities in the local hospitality industry. Since unemployment is a serious problem for society, the Institute helps people in employment, conducting training and education. The Hospitality Institute conducts four day training sessions several times a year, at which people are trained for employment. Participants learn how to write a resume, how to prepare for the interview, how to behave during the interview, as well as get general information on the employment. Also, participants are taught basic computer skills and skills necessary in the hospitality / restaurant industry. Every unemployed citizen receives advice on employment, as well as tips for overcoming the problem of unemployment. After successful completion of training, graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, which allows accessing the job postings that are provided on the Hospitality Institute website. It is important that after the training about 85% of the participants got jobs in hospitality: at hotels, cafes and restaurants and other establishments in this sphere.
I was volunteering in the Hospitality Institute for 4 days: 3 days were for training and the last day was for graduation. I really liked volunteering, as this was a new and exciting experience for me. During three days I worked at the Hospitality Institute and helped in the organization of the job training and provided assistance to the participants. I filled the paperwork, signed in participants, helped to write resumes. My manager was Randy Wiscombe, who was very nice with me, trained me and gave a reasonable example.
Volunteering at the hospitality Institute was a very good experience for me. First of all, I met many new people of different ages and professions. It was also interesting to communicate and work with professionals and other volunteers. Second, it was a great opportunity to train my skills and to learn new one. For example, I could practice my communication and organizational skills, to feel myself a part of a team and bring my contribution to the overall result. I can say that I coped well with my duties and tasks, and satisfied with the results of my work.
This work reminded me that each of us can be in a difficult situation and may need help. After all, unemployment is an urgent and serious problem in today’s world, especially taking into account the global crisis. So to help people in employment is an important task of the society. Therefore, we must help each other in difficult situations, do not turn away from people who have lost their jobs. Our society must be just and merciful, and help all its members. Social care is not empty word, but an important feature of a democratic society, in which everyone has equal rights. That is why programs of the Hospitality Institute are so important for people and I’m glad to have opportunity to take part.
Conclusion
Working as a volunteer at the Hospitality Institute was a very good experience for me. I learned many new people, got opportunity to improve my communication and organizational skills. I got new knowledge and skills that will be useful for me in life and work, and I would like to take part in volunteering in future too.
