Game of Her Life written by Tim Crothers is a story of a 14 year Ugandan girl, Phiona Mutesi who had a great talent in playing chess. It is known that she was born in a poor family in Katwe which is known as one of the largest slums in Kampala, Uganda. Her father and sister died and her mother had no opportunity to provide Phiona a good education. The girl gave up her school and had to make money for her family. She resold fruits at the street market and took care of her siblings. However, Phiona became famous for her great talent as a teenage chess player. In most games, she always trusted her intuition when she made decisions during the chess play. She became a winner many times in chess competitions which were held in Uganda. Phiona was chosen as the best teenage player in her country and she was invited to take part in chess competition at the Olympiad that took place in Siberia, Russia.
When the girl saw chess for the first time, she saw the happy faces of chess players who were always silent. And she decided to have a chance to be happy too. Katende, the girl’s coach explained the rules of the game and Phiona was like a sponge in absorbing new information. When she played chess, she remained patient and her opponents called her a player with great potential. It is known that among Phiona’s opponents were the strongest chess players from all over the world. However, only in the last tournament she managed to see herself. She was not intimidated and she won. It was the first time when she showed her emotions in public. Phiona was happy because she could feel her victory.
