Is This the Most Beautiful Street in the World? essay
Porto Alegre, the capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, is deservedly recognized as the greenest city in Brazil, because all the buildings are neatly integrated into the natural landscape caring for the green oasis of the subtropics and trying not to press up their positions by flagrant interference. It is here that one of the most beautiful streets in the world is situated, Gonçalo de Carvalho, which resembles a green river cooling the asphalt heat of urban jungle.
In the late 1930’s, along Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho, the street named after the Portuguese missionary, German officials who worked in a brewery in the area planted over a hundred Tipuana trees. Over time, the vegetation grew and formed a green tunnel, and today the originality of the street is that it is literally surrounded by greenery for 500 meters (0.3 mile) (Messenger).
In 2006, a shopping center was going to be constructed by a private construction company on the site of the alley. With the support of the residents and the mass campaign calling for the preservation of trees, Mayor Jose Fogasa awarded the street with the status of “historical, cultural and environmental heritage of the city.” After an extensive campaign to save the trees in the street, it was named “the most beautiful street in the world.” Since 2006, the trees were also declared national heritage of environment of Latin America, and it is the first time that a simple city street was awarded with such a title (Messenger; Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho Official Blog).
The street with powerful ancient trees, among other things, has its own blog, which could be found at Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho Official Blog.
