Essay on The lack of Schools and teachers trained to care for severe traumatic brain injury children
The current situation in New York
Today, New York does not have enough schools and trained teachers to care for severe traumatic brain injury children. In fact, New York has only one school for children with severe TBI, while educators do not have special training to work with children with severe TBI. As a result, children with severe TBI are just left aside of educational process and they cannot receive proper education because of the lack of schools and trained educators.
Special needs of children with severe traumatic brain injury
Children with severe TBI need a special attention from the part of educators for children recovering after the brain injury attempt to lead the active life they used to. However, severe TBI can affect their behavior that makes them different from other children. For instance, they may be aggressive in relation to other children or themselves. Teachers should meet needs of students with severe TBI.
Suggestions to improve the situation
As children with severe TBI have special needs and the state of New York does not have enough schools and trained educators, the state should develop and implement training programs for educators. In fact, the state should focus on training of teachers working in state public schools. If teachers are well trained, the state may not need to create schools for children with severe TBI specifically.
In addition, the state should provide children with TBI with the support of social workers, who can help them to integrate in their normal social life after severe TBI.
