Essay on Leadership Style
Leadership style ranks high among the socio-psychological factors of successful management. A prerequisite for effective leadership is presence of required professional business, organizational and personal qualities. Every leader has a specific style that is reflected in the way he communicates and manages employees, how he gives directions and monitors their implementation. The style of leadership may serve to characterize the quality of the leader, his ability to provide effective management of subordinates, as well as a team, ability to create a special atmosphere which leads to a favorable relationship and behavior. The extent to which the leader delegates his powers, types of power used by him, his concern of the human relationships and, above all, tasks execution – all these reflect the leadership style. Leadership style is usually stable, as it depends on the person’s socio-psychological characteristics, and is manifested in the frequent use of various methods of management. But this stability is relative, since the style is usually characterized by dynamism. Effective leadership style, when applied to certain situation, can overcome any seemed insurmountable obstacles, and will lead the system to unexpectedly high final results. Leadership style is largely determined by the individual characteristics, but despite their importance, personality characteristics do not preclude other components that make up leadership style. The leader before making any decision first thinks out all the possible ways of influencing subordinates and selects the most appropriate and reasonable in his opinion. And despite the fact that leader’s actions are often determined by job description, his work style always has unique characteristics. In the style of leadership are manifested personal qualities, which vary depending on the characteristics and needs of the community. Strong influence on the style of leadership have intellect and culture, the level of professional training and political education, personality and temperament, moral values of the leader, ability to build close relations with subordinates, ability to lead the team, to create an atmosphere of enthusiasm for the work, to fight with intolerance and indifference. (Tittemore, 2003)
My leadership style can be characterized as firm but fair. I am very knowledgeable about the areas I manage, that is why I have high demands to my subordinates. I always follow the rules and require discipline. My decisions can be described as rational, based on knowledge. As a rational leader, my behavior can be characterized by emotional stability, and I always try to avoid conflicts. I can arrange a good work in terms of stable economic relations, confidence in the future and is capable of organizing a complex production.
My effective behavior is based on skills and certain rules of behavior in society and everyday life, proved with long-term practice. I believe that the leader with his behavior must always demonstrate honesty, courage, responsibility, say truth to subordinates, colleagues and top-management, admit mistakes and do a critical self-analysis. I also have the ability to manage my emotions, which is manifested in the use of psychological techniques such as auditory training, meditation, reflection, relaxation. I have a high level of personal culture, which means knowledge of the rules of interpersonal communication and compliance with ethics. The leader should respect people and their needs, aspirations and demands, be able to consult with subordinates and trust them to critically evaluate their own achievements. As a leader I am focused, decisive, responsible and know how to demonstrate these qualities to subordinates. All of these qualities help me to be an effective leader, able to lead people.
I think that my leadership style is effective for motivating employees, due to several reasons. First of all, I always follow the rules and also require that from subordinates, that helps to organize effective work and avoid many problems. Second, I have very good knowledge and 25 years of experience in the industry, that is why subordinates usually trust my opinion and my decisions, listen to my point of view and follow my instructions. Third, I can build good relations with people, as I can understand and listen to everyone, as well as I try to avoid conflicts by all means. I am firm, but fair leader. Good relations with subordinates and personal example help to motivate people, who also try to meet the highest requirements.
