Essay on Contemporary Art Form Paper
The main aim of this paper is to combine a contemporary art form with a current issue in our society. Thus, I’m going to tell about the problem of children with disabilities who need operation and the way how society can help them using film as contemporary art form.
First of all it is necessary to mention that the problem of children with disabilities is applied to virtually all aspects of our society – beginning from legislation and social welfare organizations, which are designed to assist these children and ending with human, moral atmosphere in which they live in their families. All sides of the disabled children’s life need to be addressed, because children are our future and helping our children to become healthy we not only demonstrate the main principles of humaneness, but also begin to change our world in better side.
Basing on the statement that ideological and artistic influence of cinema on the formation of attitudes and beliefs, aesthetic tastes and feelings of the mass consciousness of millions of people is unusually high, it is possible to mention that good film about disabled children who need urgent operation can help to find sponsors and make a true an ordinary dream of many children to become a little bit healthier.
It is not accidentally that many famous people described the movie as a major power in arts. Therefore, it is naturally that the next question immediately arises: what underlies the enormous magnitude of the effect of film art, its art means and aesthetic nature, and what distinguishes it from other arts. As we know, the creative process of creating a feature film begins with a dramatic framework of the script, and then it includes the art of the actor, cameraman, artist, composer, etc. The cinema combines in itself literature, theater, painting, and music. So, its using as an appropriate art form in the solving of disabled children problems would be rather effective.
Briefly characterizing outer side of the existed situation we see that lives of children with disabilities are full of social problems. This issue has not only human, moral and spiritual sides of paramount importance in an aspect of social fact, but also lies in the sphere of all social initiatives in this area. It seems that a film making process will help to prove that children with disabilities are not abstract unity, but real children who have own face and character. Bevan (2002) stated that their body, in case of serious, multiple developmental disabilities, can cause rejection in healthy people: the soul that lives in the ultimate poverty of opportunities, rudimentary intelligence (if it comes to children with severe disabilities) – everything of these is the only thing they know, that is all they were given and all what they know from the first day to the end of their life. Nowadays they live their one and only life in severe conditions, at times, having catastrophic disabilities, and it is within our power to help them not only to find money for urgent operations, but also change the attitude of other people to this hot problem of contemporary society.
In the context of our discussion, according to Turner (1999), it is necessary to mention that the cinema is the latest of the arts that is often called the seventh art, which absorbed the experience of the previous six. It is inextricably linked with the development of technical thought about it as none of the arts, and people think about it as the brainchild of technical progress not without a reason.
Different sociological researches show that care for a child with disabilities is effective in the case when it is addressed directly to him rather than to an abstract one, if the basis is laid by personal and human relationships. The root cause in this situation is clear, because a child, even mutilated by disease, remains a person, and requires that he/she needs all those things and attitudes which every healthy person needs. Thus, making a film about disabled people it is also necessary to show that public, economic, medical and any other assistance to such children must ultimately be the foundation of personal care. It is obvious that the personal assistance can best be carried out within the family, I mean within a normal, good family, where parents love and take care of own child. There, a child can receive love, and be welcome even if he/she has some pathology. The state should not take away the child from the family, but vice versa, support the family for the purpose of to show the effective help to disabled child. It would be good to declare in the film that legislative, judicial, economic, and psychological support should be oriented exactly on the discussed above.
Thinking about existed films about disabled people it is necessary to say that the media begins to pay its attention to the issue of disabled children only recently, and the public is not ready to adopt these children. Often, healthy children much easier than their adult parents take disabled children in their communication. Seeing where the boundaries of a sick child have their end, children play with him/her in those boundaries – they adjust their behavior. Saying about adults it was proved that they have preconceived rejection.
Thus, it is possible to conclude that illness of a child is the suffering of not only the child, because people close to him/her suffer and struggle against the disease beside him/her. So, the film about disabled children can help to change situation and teach people and society to accept disabled people as personalities.
In conclusion, the film as an art form could help to understand that not only disabled children need our help, but we need their help, too, because God can give us through these children a new kind of understanding that we simply would not be able to get without their help.
