Essay on Assessment of the Genitourinary System
A 31 year old, American female needs medical assistance because she suffers from the following symptoms: painful frequent urination, bladder pain, painful premenstrual symptoms. She does not indicate any change in her urine color. However, she suffers from pain during sexual intercourse with her husband.
Questions: Have you any problems with urination (pain, color, frequency)? Do you urinate at night? What about pregnancy? Do you have any problems with pregnancy? Have you suffered from any infectious diseases? Have you had any surgeries?
Risk factors: discomfort, increased pain, cystitis, sharp pain during the intercourse, bladder pain syndrome, depression. (D’Amico, D. & Barbarito, C., 2010).
Physical examination techniques: Examination of abdomen in supine position. Observation of symmetry, masses, color changes. Auscultation of the renal arteries, abdominal aorta, and clavicles with the help stethoscope. Palpating of the costovertebral angle on both sides for the expression of pain and the bladder for location, size, and symmetry. Blunt percussion over the costovertebral angles (Interstitial Cystitis, 2010).
Patient education: It is necessary to inform the patient of negative consequences of tobacco, alcohol and drugs, chocolate and citrus, spices and high acid products. The use of diet is of great importance. Medical treatment will help to stop the development of genitourinary system disorders. Physical exercises can help to relieve the symptoms of disorder (National Kidney and Urological Diseases Information Clearing House, 2011).
