To start with, a director technical rehearsal is a very important component of any performance. When the technical rehearsal is badly executed and planned, the director feels nervous and confused, the working and programing team are not sure of their strength, and the production team is irresolute and unprepared. When the technical rehearsal is prepared and organized well, all members of a team feel confident and resolute.
In general, a rehearsal is the main form of training (under the director’s direction) of theater, circus performances, concert programs, separate room and scene through multiple repetitions (in whole or in part). Besides, a rehearsal is a lesson, but without any tendency to teaching. The rehearsal is a theory in action in practice.
The technical rehearsal is a rehearsal, which concentrates on the performance’s technological aspects, in musical, theatrical and filmed entertainment.

There are the main four types of the technical rehearsals: dry tech, tech, pick-up tech and paper tech.
The dry tech rehearsal is a rehearsal that is conducted without any actors. This is a period, usually proceeding some hours, where each department head and designer work with his/her segments of the production. In addition, this is a perfect chance for the team, who will manage the necessary equipment in order to become acquainted with the performance’s flow. Generally, it includes different lights that are cued in a consecutive order, catching any problems connected with position, brightness, framing or angle. After that the sound effects, levels of music and microphones that are going to be used, are checked. Certainly, there can be other and extra steps for specifically effect-intensive productions, where the working team checks and tries different specific effects, such as explosions, fires and so on.
The tech rehearsal is a rehearsal that consists of performers. This rehearsal holds through the whole production, either cue-to-cue or in its completeness. This is important to add that throughout the tech, all previous actions conducted during the dry tech are rehearsed and prepared. For instance, the levels on the microphones of the actors, lighting in accordance with the stage placement and staged blocking are checked. When all preparations are properly done and the director feels comfortable and assured, the tech rehearsal is formally finished. The next rehearsals to be presented are the dress rehearsal and final dress.
The pick-up tech rehearsal is a rehearsal that is always scheduled. The pick-up tech rehearsal usually contains the problem areas from the previous shows, repeating difficult transitions, effects or other technical aspects. Usually it proceeds for a few hours. It is important to note that the technical rehearsals can hold in a different order than mentioned above, or can contain other different production departments.
The last type of the technical rehearsals is the paper tech rehearsal. Before entering the theater, each designer (scenic, sound, lighting and costumes) will communicate with the stage manager in order to discuss sound and lighting cues, the scenery’s movement and different costume changes. This type of the rehearsal is named “paper tech” because all technical aspects are put down on the paper.
Taking the above-mentioned information into account, it is possible to draw a conclusion that the technical rehearsal is really an important component of any performance.
