Essay on Compare Love Theme

Love theme holds the central place in different forms of art, especially literature. At the same time, it is possible to trace the theme of love in music as well as sculpture. At this point, it is possible to refer to classical Sonnet 142 by William Shakespeare, “I Love You” by Celine Dion, and Love Sculpture by Robert Indiana. These three works of art focus on the theme of love but still they reveal this theme in different ways, uncovering different sub-themes in love.

First of all, it is possible to dwell upon Shalkespeare’s Sonnet 142, where the author uncover the sub-theme of the juxtaposition between true and fair love and mere physical attraction:

And sealed false bonds of love as oft as mine,

Robbed others’ beds’ revenues of their rents

(Shakespeare)

In such a way, Shakespeare shows that love is often treacherous.

Celine Dion, instead, develops the sub-theme of the physical attraction and appeal in love, which contrasts to Shakespeare’s spiritual love:

So today, I finally find the courage deep inside
Just to walk right up to your door
But my body can’t move when I finally get to it
Just like a thousand times before (Dion)

The sexual appeal proves to be extremely strong and overwhelming.

In this regard, Love Sculpture by Robert Indiana raises an ironic view on love, which is not always straight but complicated and difficult. In such a way, Robert Indiana views love from a different angle compared to Shakespeare and Dion. In fact, he suggests to view love ironically and he does not take it seriously.

Thus, different works of art suggest different views on love, which though always play an important part in the life of people.
