According to the DRUGPOLICY.ORG Essay
According to the DRUGPOLICY.ORG, more than 800,000 people are arrested for marijuana each year, the vast majority of them for simple possession. Hence, among all arrests for drug’s possessing marijuana is the most common drug. As a result, there are more and more people who think that Marijuana should be legalized. As for me, I am strongly against the legalization of marijuana because I am totally sure that it would not bring much use, but on the contrary, it can cause a number of problems, such as health problems, immoral behavior, and the desire to try harder drugs, such as heroin or cocaine. In addition, children would have the possibility to access it easily.
Of course, there are pros and cons of the marijuana’s legalization. Joe Messerli in his article, “Should Marijuana be Legalized under any Circumstances?” states that the society has recently come across the movements of marijuana’s legalization. People who are fond of marijuana just can’t understand why it is not allowed as it is not as harmful as tobacco or alcohol. In addition, they claim that this prohibition shows that we don’t live in a free society as in fact, there is no free choice of using it or not as it is not legalized. As a result, California already allows marijuana for medicinal purposes. Furthermore, now a great number of the Americans are for its legalization but there are also others who still believe that it causes health damage and features bad influence on the behavior and moral principles of people. (Messerli, 2011).
So, what are the advantages of the legalization of marijuana?
Legalizationofmarijuana.com reports that one of the main reasons why people want this drug to be allowed is that its prohibition means that the state does not respect the person’s free will and the self-determination right. The other reason is that there are a number of the politicians that are interested in this War on Drugs. In addition, Messerli (2011) says that according to the survey, marijuana isn’t so harmful as alcohol or tobacco. Being legalized, it will be cheaper that would result in the reducing of the related crimes, such as robbery or theft. Besides, marijuana may be good for health as it can prevent from a number of illnesses, for instance, cancer or nervous breakdowns. (Messerli, 2011) Furthermore, DRUGPOLICY.ORG claims that in some cases marijuana is the only medicine that can relieve pain, bad mood and suffering. There are also other advantages, such as pleasure, the feeling of calmness and happiness, and etc.
Meanwhile, there are people who are against legalization of this drug. And I totally agree with them. We all know that it causes a lot of health problems and can badly influence the behavior of the person. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, there have been a number of crimes because people were under the influence of marijuana.
(Marijuana Dispensaries Linked to Fatal Car Crash, May, 2008) In addition, 1st Marijuana Growers Page states that marijuana would also increase the desire to try harder drugs, such as heroin, cocaine or LCD. And the other reason for not allowing the marijuana to become legal is that children would have the possibility to access it easily. (Messerli, 2011) It should not be also forgotten that the legalization of marijuana would also cause the danger for non-users, for example, while sitting at the bar. According to Test Country, the studies that have been recently done regarding the usefulness of the drug are not considered to be enough to convince the authorities of its efficiency in the medical sector.( Marijuana Legalization: The Pros and Cons). And finally, being a drug why should it be legalized?
In conclusion, there is no exact answer regarding the issue of the marijuana’s legalization because according to the mentioned above it features both advantages and disadvantages. It can prevent from many illnesses but it can cause some as well. However, I believe that it won’t be legalized as it is a drug after all, and the society doesn’t need the legalization of one more drug as now we have plenty of the legal drugs and problems regarding them, for example, caffeine, tobacco and alcohol.
