Aboriginal child welfare agencies in Canada essay

Canada is one of the countries that have developed a decentralized child welfare system. In Canada, child welfare system is comprised of 13 provincial and territorial child welfare systems. There are Mйtis, First Nations and urban Aboriginal child and family service agencies that follow the established laws, federal policies and funding models. In most cases, Aboriginal child welfare agencies are authorized to provide child protection services and receive federal funding to perform these services (Child Welfare Services in Canada: Aboriginal and Mainstream, 2010).

According to the recent research, several cities in Canada have developed “Aboriginal child and family service agencies that serve the members of all Aboriginal nations, and that are funded and delegated by the province” (Child Welfare Services in Canada: Aboriginal and Mainstream, 2010). For example, Aboriginal Justice Inquiry – Child Welfare Initiative in Manitoba has implemented a system of First Nation, Mйtis and non-Aboriginal child welfare authorities that provide assistance in determination of the proper agency to provide child welfare services.
