Review Chapter essay
Social movements in the global South aimed at the struggle on the dispossession. The poverty-stricken countries were looking for options to enhance their position in the global economy but their population lived in poverty. The poverty was one of the main burdens social movements aimed at and attempted to eliminate.
Workers united their efforts and launched labor movements against the oppressive regimes in Egypt, Arab world as well as other countries of the global South. Their primary goal was the elimination of the hegemony of the rich and granting the poor and the average workers with basic rights and liberties along with rising their standards of living. In general, they just attempted to put the end to the poverty that affected the majority of the population of many countries of the global South.
At the same time, often the population of the global South was deprived of basic commodities and goods. For instance, a large part of the population of South Africa suffered from the shortage of potable water. In response to existing regulations, local social movements opposed to the prepayment of water meters in South Africa, which limited the access of the poor to the potable water.
Finally, the development of such densely populated countries as India faced the problem of the shortage of food supply and poor health care, which were available to the upper class mainly, while the poor lived in unaffordable conditions and suffered from the almost permanent shortage of food.
Thus, the position of nations of the global South was quite difficult and social movements attempted to tackle the poverty above all, since poverty was the primary cause of other social problems in the region.
