Progressive trends in packaging design essay
Contemporary trends in the packaging industry are certainly a reflection of the economic and social development of society. Modern consumers are becoming more demanding to the original design of products, they have seen “it all” or “almost all”, so they want something special, catchy, having multitouch qualities (Klimchuk & Krasovec, 2013; Mishra & Jain, 2012). Consumers also show a tendency to be more concerned about their health, they are more informed about the needs of body, and increasingly count with the usefulness of products. In recent years, the safety performance of packages, and their compliance with environmental standards have also become a milestone of the commodities market (Jedlicka, 2008; PWC, 2012). The pace of modern life, the rapidity of changes, globalization and urbanization process, mobility and the stirring activity of the majority of the population imposes a significant imprint on the development of the industry, when the ease of usage, availability, and multi-functionality of products play important roles (Simms & Trott, 2010; Klimchuk & Krasovec, 2013; PWC, 2012).
Knowing the current trends in packaging design allows conveying the essence of the brand, win and retain the target audience through visual and technological means more effectively. Further, we will focus separately on the major trends: ecopackaging, smart packaging and augmented reality, as well as technological innovations involved in them.
