Total quality Essay
W. Edward Deming is considered to be one of the total quality pioneers. He is a well-known and the most authoritative proponent of quality management in the USA. He has contributed a lot to the development of various concepts which together create an appropriate approach to total quality of products and services. It is known that Deming’s bold management ideas formed “a new philosophy”.(Gabor, 1990, p.16)
The following concepts can be related to absolutely new “quality movement”:
The Deming Cycle;
Deming’s Fourteen Points;
Deming’s Seven Deadly Diseases.
Total quality is a process which includes different activities of the company’s employees to improve the quality of products and services, people and environments.
The major elements of quality are the following ones:
strategic plan;
customer focus;
using scientific approach in the work;
long-term commitment;
a well organized teamwork;
the use of continual process of improvement;
education and training;
well-planned controls.
Deming became successful due to the use of the total quality elements on which his cycle was based:
planning the product;
checking the product;
analyzing the product’s quality, cost in the marketplace.
Deming’s Fourteen Points also include total quality elements:
training on the job;
teamwork;
programs of education and self-improvement.(Goetsch&Davis, 2010, p.15)
The elements of quality are useful in today’s environment because they help to choose an appropriate way of doing business, to avoid common errors which can lead to failure in business.
In my opinion, the future of quality management is based on the following trends:
increasing of competition between different companies for the best quality of products and services;
changes in the company’s organization;
the increasing role of customers in the quality evaluation.
