Essay on Sweeney Todd: Posting

What makes art and theater good and successful? Nowadays, this question is becoming more and more disputable and problematic. Focusing our specific attention on “Sweeney Todd,” it is possible to say that it can be considered to be a good material for the stage. “Sweeney Todd” made an attempt to show the sinister aspect of human existence, to shed light, and to portray a man who fell into oblivion. In fact, the statement “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is frightening enough, but like any other art form, it requires some knowledge and skills to execute it.

Though “Sweeney Todd” can be viewed as a radical deviation from the usual material, it does not mean that the stage is able to discriminate against this play. Disgusting does not mean that it is not in good taste or undesirable. To believe that “Sweeney Todd” is too disgusting to be considered art or good theatre is the same to believe that The Queen of the Damned or Lord of the Flies are too disgusting to be considered literature.

If “Sweeney Todd” fills individuals with fear and persuades them to be disgusting and unpleasant then it is possible to conclude that it has proved to be successful and effective in transferring its essence. In fact, Sweeney Todd is truly human: he likes his daughter deeply and his desire to revenge is not uncommon.

Taking the above-mentioned information into consideration, it is possible to draw a conclusion that Sweeney Todd can be considered to be a good material for the stage. And although it is quite different from the usual stuff, it has a right to life.
