Interpersonal communication essay

Interpersonal communication plays an important role in any organization. As a rule, interpersonal communication involves two individuals working together and responsible for the transaction. Each of the individuals has “to send messages, receive messages, give feedback, interpret non-verbal messages, listen carefully both the facts and to the feelings behind the facts” (Fielding 107). The major skills that can help to improve interpersonal communication include active listening, effective non-verbal communication practices and tolerance. The main principle of interpersonal communication is an ability of the individuals to state facts clearly.

Organizational communication is focused on communication practices within organization, and “concerned with the flow of information – upward, downward and sideward” (Fielding 25). In addition, organizational communication is focused on the effects of leadership, managerial styles and motivation on communication. This type of communication includes different spoken and written messages.

It is known that organizational communication is more complex than interpersonal communication because “there are more communication channels, more individuals to communicate with and more information to transmit” (Marquis et al. 441). When people work in a group, conflict is inevitable. Any type of organization requires the appropriate communication skills in the field of conflict resolution. The ideal way to conflict resolution is a so-called “win-win solution” in which both sides can achieve their goals. According to Rahim, there are five conflict management styles: avoiding, compromising, dominating (win-lose outcome), integrating (win-win outcome), and obliging styles (lose-win approach) (Bartlett 43).  Avoiding style is characterized by evading behaviors of individuals. As a rule, people try to avoid conflict because they know that they cannot handle it in a proper way. Avoiding style best fit my personality. I always try to postpone conflict resolution till the anger has disappeared.
