Illegal immigration is one of the most vital problems in the United States. Exploring the problem, many researchers found out that it causes the increasing of the terrorism and international crime in the country. Government considers that the citizens of the U. S. cannot feel themselves well – secured if the number of the illegal immigrants is going to increase. In this project we research the problem of illegal border crossings and human smuggling; also we consider the magnitude of the flow of illegal immigrants into the U. S. and the countries where these immigrants originate; moreover, we are going to examine the law enforcement resources committed to the problem of the illegal immigrants and the role of different agencies and the military in addressing the problem
According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services: Glossary (2008), illegal immigration in the country is the “act of foreign nationals violating the United States immigration policies and national laws”; illegal immigrants enter the country “without the proper permission” from the state government.
According to the researches of the Center for Immigration Studies mentioned in Freeman’s (2009) work we see that “the illegal immigrant population in the country is about 11 million people”. Some other researches give us the number of illegal immigrants between 7 million and 20 million. Talking about the countries where the immigrants are coming from, different reports give us the following information according to Estimates of the Size and Characteristics of the Undocumented Population – Full Report by Freeman (2009): “56 % are from Mexico; 22 % are from different Latin American countries; and Central America; 13 % are from Asia; 6 % are from Europe and Canada; 3 % are from African countries and from the rest of the world”.
What laws commit to the problem of the illegal immigrants? First of all, the law that helps to classify the immigration that is considered illegal. Those people who crossed the border of the state without inspection and authorization are considered to be the illegal immigrants. Also those who enter U. S. legally but stay in the country after the authorized period is finished start being the illegal immigrants. Law provides the imprisonment for such kinds of the lawbreakers. The term of the imprisonment is the half of a year for the person who made the offence for the first time; for those who break the law more than once the term of the imprisonment is increased to 2 years.
Talking about the law enforcement we can mention the course of Arizona (Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhood Act, 2010). According to the Act as it was mentioned by Rassmussen (2010), police have a right to ask a person about his or her immigration status if the police has some suspicious about it. Many citizens are for the enforcement because they wish to feel themselves secured in their own country. In the situation when the international crime and terrorism is increasing it is wise to make some enforcement of immigration law. After the tragedy that happened on 11th of September 2001 the problem of the terrorism is a very vital not only for the United States. Nevertheless, there are many other reasons for the enforcement of law. Among these reasons first of all we can point on the drug trafficking and different crimes that committed by the illegal immigrants.
What role does agencies and military play in solving of the problem? They are making a great job like, for example, improvement the security of the state borders and passport controls. It is a hard diplomatic job because different agencies should prevent the illegal immigrants to enter the country; at the same time they should not give any problems to those people who are entering the United States legally. Military and police are under the first blow if something like crime or terrorist act happens.
The problem of the illegal immigrants is wide and there are many different aspects to discuss in its frames. In the conclusion we can state that government is putting its efforts on solving this problem and other problems that are connected with it.
